I had a chat with the CTO of Novell Canada, which ultimately sparked an article on where Novell's been taking the Linux desktop for SuSE 10.1. This particular article focuses on the Better Desktop Initiative and XGL, along with discussing other advancements as well.

Interesting stuff here. I've taken on board that existing Windows users are the most difficult ones to convert as they keep referencing back to Windows, whereas new users will readily take to Linux as that's all they'll know. One interesting observation is that a 74 year old relative who started with Linux has found that he can easily follow a Windows for Seniors class and even use the Linux OOo to do class assignments. With nice things like Google are now releasing for Linux, the borders are beginning to blur in key areas of home use, a close relative of 66 with only 6 months Windows 2000 experience is now happily using a Linux box I set up for him. As he is a keen photographer, I was delighted as he was when I plugged in his digital camera and up popped Google picasa with all his photos which are now stored on his hard drive. Mindsets are the main obstacle. If Microsoft had produced SuSE 10.1 and called it Windows XXX, users would be of a mind to learn how to use it, after the initial shock of discovering it's different to what they had become accustomed, just as will happen with Vista down the road a bit.
