Resigning from LinuxWorld Magazine

Published: 11:05 PM GMT-08, Friday, 13 May 2005

This letter has already been emailed to the people involved:

Dear Fuat and SYS-CON,

I am writing this letter to tender my resignation. I have worked hard on LinuxWorld Magazine since its inception, and really don't want to walk away from it as it continues
to build up a good head of steam, but given recent events I just cannot continue to be associated with SYS-CON. The complete (and public) lack of understanding of why O'Gara's maelstrom article was wrong, among other things, suggests to me that my sense of ethics is simply too divergent from SYS-CONs and there will be further heated clashes in the future.

Please don't bother to accuse me of bowing to "intimidation from the community." Anyone who looks through my body of work sees that I really have no problems saying things that need to be said. I've had my share of unkind moments on Slashdot. The only thing I am bowing to is my own sense of frustration and futility.

Signed,
Dee-Ann LeBlanc
Former Gaming Industry Editor of LinuxWorld Magazine

Those who are interested can watch my main site for more. Guess I need to create a new blog, now that I finally have lots of traffic here. Sigh!

Other resignations (EDITED TO ADD these are not all, these are just the ones with public statements, the entire senior editorial staff is gone):

James Turner
Steve Suehring
MC Brown

Good luck in your future endeavors.

That the three of you took a principled and moral stand will be one of the high points for the community in years to come.

Thank you for your principled stand on journalistic ethics. Please let us know where your material will be appearing in the future. I look forward to reading your articles somewhere that has no association with Sys-Con.

You are doing the right thing, for both business and ethical reasons.

Thank You

I commend you guys for standing up for your ethics. I did not see the article but I will let you know that I canceled my subscription to sysadmin magazine that I just renewed and gave this whole O'Gara thing as the excuse. I sent and email to Fuat and will be following it up with a hard copy letter.

Thanks to all of you for setting a shining example and I will buy any magazine you go to work for just make it known to everyone and I will buy it.

thanks again - oh ya and don't give my name to Ms. O'Gara - I don't want my info published on the internet either.

thanks,

Thank you and your fellow editors that made this courageous stand - please work with your fellow (ex) editors to establish a magazine that upholds the standards that your former employer found so difficult to achieve.

Dee may I suggest http://www.linuxuser.co.uk (Linux User & Developer), http://www.linuxjournal.com (Linux Journal) and http://www.linux-magazin.com (Linux Pro Magazine) as alternative outlets for your work? I used to pick these all up from a small local book store but have since subscribed to them directly.

It's food for thought when the writer of Linux For Dummies takes a moral stand. Bravo, and best wishes for the future!

Thank you for taking an ethical stand! I read Fuat's interview and was nearly as disgusted with his complete lack of "getting the point" and desire to attack the victim as I was O'Gara's original stalker trash piece. They deserve each other, and I take comfort in the fact that they've finally shown themselves for who they are. I can't imagine either will have much future in the Linux/FOSS markets, since the taint of their unbelievably slimy actions will follow them like stink on a dead squirrel.

Well done to you. It's a brave and difficult thing to stand up for your values and I congratulate you for doing it. I'll be contacting Linuxworld with my opinions on that ****ing interview; it's pathetic and sad that Linuxworld is in the hands of Fuat Kircaali, a person who apparently would not recognise unacceptable journalism if it bit him on the butt.

This is a sad, sad day in the history of online journalism, and you took the right approach.

I wish to thank you for that.
